I stumbled across Part Nouveau a while ago and have been obsessing over it for ages. The website’s premise is to “characterize fashion photography, fashion trends and ultimately anything within the creative field that borrows, reappropriates or is directly inspired by a work which preceded it.” Examples on the website include the above image – René Magritte’s “Golconda” compared with a 2008 editorial entitled “Sir Realist”, shot by Andrew Matusik. Part Nouveau also delves deeply into trends and details within particular collections or seasons and shows their historical counterparts, or artworks that inspired them.
I don’t know about anyone else but I can really geek out over fashion history, and I find it really interesting to ‘analyse’ collections and trends to pinpoint their obscure (or sometimes not so) references. The website would be really great as a research tool, or just for anyone who gets as weird about this stuff as I do…
Check Part Nouveau out here.
